What are the powerful reasons behind learners leaving their online courses?

Online learning is an educational platform that takes place over the internet. It is also known as distance learning or e-learning.

In this pandemic, students are not allowed to continue their offline classes in school, college or other educational institutions. They have found an alternative way of teaching i.e online learning. This platform is new to everyone. Students are bound to use e-learning which creates conflict between the students as some of the students find this mode very convenient and simple whereas some find it very confusing and time-consuming.

These are the following reasons which made learners leave their online courses.

Poor Communication:

Online education can feel isolating. Students that lack self-esteem and confidence, hesitate to ask doubts which results in a poor understanding of the chapter. E-learning is new to India. Just like students, teachers also face many difficulties. They face problems conveying lectures to the students. On-campus learning is quite easy as compared to online classes. Students can ask their doubts in class, there will be teachers and students who will help him/her both in studies and other co-curricular activities. While in online learning, learners have to sit alone and stay motivated for quite long hours which is impossible.

Technological glitches :

Technology plays a vital role in distance learning. India is a country that has different types of landforms which include Mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus and islands. So, it is evident that not every region is blessed with technological development. Students living in remote areas face difficulties during online classes. Due to rough weather conditions network connections isn't good enough in the hilly regions. Poor Internet frustrates students and when it happens, some learners may leave the class.

Time-consuming:

E-learning consumes more time than on-campus classes. Students spend more time analysing, studying and writing assignments. If students have some doubts regarding any subject or assignment, he/she have to convey the message through typing a text and wait for the educators to respond. As we all know, typing consumes more time than speaking. In the same way, reading the lecture materials take more time than listening to the instructor to deliver them.

Low motivation:

Low motivation doesn't mean laziness. There are infinite reasons that demotivate learners. Some of them are discussed above. It is quite impossible to sit in the same place for 5-6 hours in front of a cell- phone or laptop. It also affects our bodies. More than 50% of the students suffer from headaches, irritation in the eyes, pain in the backbone and most importantly lack of mental stability.

Environment:

Believe it or not, the classroom environment is far better than the home environment. In India, most of the student's live in joint families and due to these pandemics, everyone stays at home which doesn't provide adequate space to the student. As Maria Montessori says,

"The work of education is divided between the teacher and the environment "

which states that both teachers and the environment play a vital role in students education.

Time management:

As we have discussed above, online learning consumes more time than on-campus learning. In most cases, teachers send a 45 minutes video lecture which requires more than 2 hours of analysis, understanding and then finally writing. Online education provides a good platform where students can rewind, pause and replay the video lecture. These benefits can only be experienced when a student is responsible and completes every class in time, which is quite rare. These advantages turn into disadvantages by not attending a single class in a day. Online learning demands strong determination and self-discipline skills. You have to be dedicated to your studies. Today's generation lives on social media. While attending classes students should mute his/her WhatsApp and Instagram notification to avoid distraction. It is a very difficult choice but online learning should be given more priority.

More freedom:

Online education gives more freedom than on-campus learning. You are your boss. No one is there to guide you, you have to be conscious and disciplined. Online learning provides freedom which can be dangerous if you don't learn how to handle it.

Responsible for your studies:

In online learning, only you are responsible for your studies. No one will be there to force you and make you study. You have to make your schedules and develop time management skills. You have to complete your backlogs and complete all the assignments promptly. It might be a bit hectic, but through proper planning and execution, you can complete every assignment in time.

Lack of practical knowledge:

Online courses can only teach the theoretical part but What about the practical knowledge? How can the practicals be done in online mode? How would medical and engineering students study? Learners get demotivated when practical classes are also done in online mode. Most of the time they lose interest and cannot relate with the teacher which ends with leaving the class. In today's world, practical knowledge is given more importance but due to this pandemic, students are taught practicals in online mode.

Though there are many reasons to leave online classes, find one reason to stay motivated and continue the class. We have to make ourselves ready for every tough situation and conquer them with a big smile. Remember when G.S Anant said,

"Be ready to face any situation because life always plans surprises".

I believe all the learners are strong enough to face the difficulties and start a new journey of education.

Are Online Courses Worth It?

A prosperous and stable global culture is underpinned by convenient educational attainment. Although the principle is incredibly admirable, vast areas of the globe are unable to keep up with those provisions. For many, particularly in developing nations, having a high quality of education is a fantasy that is walked across very mercilessly.

The established college and classroom structure has ruled over the notion of supervised and credentialed schooling for over a generation. While the mission is still completely championed, there has been a rather revolutionary breakthrough that has reached epidemic proportions in this COVID age – online courses.

The world has gone online.

A latest Harvard Business School paper highlights students' desire to study through courses online. The pattern is proportional to the days in which we function and the susceptibility of the fourth Industrial Revolution to cross-generational labor forces and technological developments. Taking into account the change to the GIG economy, apprentices want to be multi-skilled to carry on multiple roles at work. This is made possible by online classes.

What makes learning online remarkable is that it utilizes the Internet as the primary mode of communication, particularly the World Wide Web. Therefore, you do not have to be anywhere to train while you teach remotely. You do not have to lug your briefcase full of papers or your laptop to a classroom, stand at a podium, scribble on a chalkboard, or grade papers in a stuffy room while your students take a test. You do not even have to sit in the room waiting for sessions for students to turn up. On occasions or at night after dinner, you can keep "office hours".

Moreover, if you are working for a college whose administrative offices are based in Mumbai or Delhi, you can do all this when living in a small town in Bihar or a major city like Bangalore. You can teach your class on the same day in Hyderabad and can attend an important conference in Hawaii, wishing for it from your laptop via the wireless hotspot of the local cafe or the high-speed network of your hotel room.

For students as well, online learning provides more flexibility. For services, workshops, and teachers that suit their needs, they may browse for courses using the Internet, scouring their organization or even the globe. They will enroll and register, shop for their books, read papers, listen to lectures, apply their homework assignments, and meet with their teachers after having found a suitable course.

In virtual classrooms, they can gather, encounter other students from different geographical locations, and forge bonds and connections that are not possible in traditional classrooms, typically restricted to students from a single geographic location.

A suitable online class is probably worth it, but it would be prudent to be careful in selecting a course. There are already varieties of online classes. To facilitate personal courses and programs affordable, many training companies hop on the bus and, sadly, others have hardly any academic merit. Thus, forthcoming participants need to be vigilant in selecting an online course.

Although competitiveness for small office spaces is growing and dependency on technology and AI is increasingly becoming a norm, people need to concentrate on a coordinated effort to improve themselves on an ongoing basis. There is already a range of ways accessible and with such an emphasis on online channels that have evolved rapidly in recent years, more individuals have taken to online classes to provide them with cooperation. While some prejudice exists surrounding online classes, you should not let it hinder the process. The solution is simple when it comes to whether or not those modules are worth doing: it varies. In the right circumstances, they can be a perfect way to learn new things and advance your career. Choose the right issue and organization, and online learning will help you make a move.

Udemy vs. Coursera's IPO: What does it mean for all the learners out there?

 Introduction

Online learning has come off age. With two significant companies getting listed in the market, i.e., Coursera (NYSE: COUR) first and then Udemy (Nasdaq: UDMY), it is now widely accepted that online learning is here to stay. Both of them had a somewhat different listing story to tell. In this article, we will be listing everything you need to know about Udemy stocks and Coursera stocks.

Some statistics of both platforms

  • Coursera priced 15.73 million shares at $33 per stock. In the IPO offering, it raised $520 million at an implied valuation of USD 4.3 bn. Interestingly this stock gave a listing gain of 36%, closing on the debut day at $45 per stock. It even went as high as $58 per share on April 7, 2021. However, it has corrected quite a bit since then and is currently trading at $32.53 per stock as of November 19, 2021.

  • Following Coursera, Udemy sold 14.5 million shares at $29 per stock as IPO fundraising of USD 421 mn. Incorporating the total diluted shares, the total implied value of the company was around USD 4.3 bn, almost similar to Coursera. However, unlike its most prominent competitor, it fell on listing day. The stock declined 6% on debut to record at below the issue price. However, it has recovered well since then and is now trading at USD 30.97 per stock as of November 19, 2021.

Of course, it's fascinating to see how different the listing day and overall stock price movement since then. Udemy has done better in trading compared to Coursera. But will this sustain?

Profits

Udemy is a more prominent company in terms of revenue at an annualized FY 2021 run rate of ~USD 500mn. Coursera, on the other hand, is a tad lower than Udemy at FY 2021 potential revenue of USD 400 mn. While both companies grew aggressively in FY 2020, given the pandemic that happened for most of the year, Udemy's gain has slowed down in FY 2021. Coursera, on the other hand, has grown faster than Udemy in FY 2021, which gives it a significant upper hand for the future revenue potential of the two companies.

Prices of sales

The cost of revenues relates to the fees that these platforms need to pay to the educational partners and instructors and the expenses associated with the operations of the forum. Coursera has done better than Udemy by a few percentage points every year on this metric. In 2021, Coursera's cost of sales is 41% of revenues, while Udemy's is slightly higher at 45% of the company's revenues.

The supply-side

In designing a marketplace of online courses, Udemy and Coursera employed different strategies to generate the supply of online lessons.

Coursera, established by distinct AI engineers and computer scientists from Stanford, Daphne Koller, and Andrew Ng, is concentrated on producing supply by signing universities and institutions as providers of online classes. This firm tries to pursue its advancements to preserve a high level of quality. Its supply tactics are more B2B by creating associations with many universities and industries.

In contrast, Udemy's supply tactics are more B2C. Since academics did not find Udemy, the company took a different, more democratized approach.

As a result of this, Udemy has a more diverse and breadth of courses than Coursera, albeit with varying quality. As of Q2 2021, Udemy had more than 11,000 courses, while Coursera had about 4,600. However, due to their academic and industry incorporation, Coursera offers professional certificates and degrees.

This means that Coursera can resolve for more "jobs to do" that colleges habitually perform. Colleges typically have various functions. As Marc Andreesen articulately summed up:

  • It is a daycare for young adults

  • It is an environment for collective dating

  • It offers to learn windows of opportunities

  • It is a testing gateway (a stand-in for employers to strain for capability)

  • It is blazing

Considering all the "jobs to do" above, Coursera's courses can solve the last three. In contrast, Udemy, with its more diverse courses but less quality control, only solves for one (the third bullet point: provides learning opportunities).

How does this translate to demand, then?

The demand side

Both companies, i.e., Udemy and Coursera, try their best to users directly (individual learners) and businesses (B2B customers).

Discrete learners: Coursera has over 82 million learners. On the other hand, Udemy has about half of that (44 million in Q2 2021).

B2B customers: Coursera counts businesses as customers (with 100+ Fortune 500 companies as customers) and governments and other universities (smaller scale universities can provide online courses from more prominent colleges). This company has more than 6,000 B2B customers (primarily businesses).

In contrast to Coursera, Udemy uses a bottom-up approach in B2B sales. They leverage B2C customers as leads to upsell the organization the customer works in. In 2020, over 60% of information came from their direct-to-consumer platform. The company has over 8,600 global business customers.

Preparing v/s Higher training

The two businesses do not have the same B2B strategies. However, Udemy curates its high-quality classes and offers them to companies to upskill their workers. Coursera has related upskill offerings but has an additional 'Degrees' program.

The 'Degrees' program repackages existing courses made by various universities and offers the package to other universities, enabling them to provide supplementary both bachelor's as well as master's degrees. As Coursera is just replenishing actual content and selling it through another channel, the gross profit margin for this part is around 100%. As of Q3 2021, the 'Degrees' part is about 10% of total revenue generated and is growing 59% annually.

Coursera can do this as it handles a contrasting frequent market tactic. As we restrict the "jobs to do" section above, its association with universities helps Coursera to set itself as more than just an upskilling platform; instead, it positions itself as a replacement for in-person higher learning.

Conclusion

By contrast, Udemy has more straightforward projects and minor variations. They've provided for a limited time the ability to create auto-graded coding exercises. But these are seldom used. Of Udemy's 157,000 courses, only 600 have this sort of coding exercise.

One significant difference between both providers is how they handle the interaction between instructors and students and among students themselves.

Coursera directs learners to forums with varying levels of instructor and student activity. By contrast, Udemy has individual Q&As underneath each course section, increasing visibility of the feature and encouraging targeted interactions around the course content.

HOW DO EMOTIONS HEPL IN ONLINE COURSES/WHAT’S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN EMOTIONS AND ONLINE COURSES

Not so long ago, it was thought that online learning was a strictly rational process in which emotions did not have a big role. This belief was formed together with a certain definition of intelligence derived from the “famous” IQ tests – yet designed to detect learning difficulties in children. We now know that emotions play such an important role in cognition that they can serve as a lever or, on the contrary, become a brake. Whether you are a teacher or a learner, here are some things to keep in mind!

A vital protection system

An emotion can be defined as an “organism’s reaction to an external event, which has physiological, cognitive and behavioral aspects” (Jacques Lacoste’s Les 30 notions de la psychology). Our emotions have long been considered unimportant, if not shameful or cumbersome. We now know that they play a vital role in our individual equilibrium and in our social relations. Thus, if it has already been good to silence or hide them, the tendency now is to listen to them, tame them, express them, and to learn how to manage them better.

It is normal that, to a certain extent, our emotions fluctuate because that is how they fulfill their role, that of a hyper-sophisticated protection system. This system helped us ensure the survival of our species by helping us identify in our environment the elements that can affect us, favorably or not, and then guiding us on how to react to preserve our integrity, or our well-being. Our emotions play this role now as well, even if our environment is different. As an extra note, the term “emotion” comes from the Latin “remover” which means “to put in motion”.

Learning is destabilizing!

Learning involves questioning what we think we know, opening oneself to new ideas and more complexity, and making efforts without necessarily knowing the outcome. In short, it is a destabilizing step which, although it contains a lot of positive emotions, can not keep us away from feeling any negative emotion. It is important to remind the learners of this fact, to encourage them to express themselves on what destabilizes them in their learning process and to give them the necessary resources to help.

A phenomenon that involves a great deal of subjectivity and impalpability, the emotions experienced in a group vary from one learner to another. This difference can be explained by several factors specific to a group of individuals: ethnic origin, culture, gender, sense of belonging to the educational institution, and so on. Studies have confirmed, for example, that exam anxiety is higher among students in some parts of the world than in others.

Despite the influence that these factors may have, it is the individual differences that carry the most weight: our physiology and our genetics, our experience, our personal values, and so on. To these intrinsic peculiarities, one must add elements such as self-confidence, self-interest for a particular subject, and the fact that the emotional state of each person evolves distinctly over time.

Accelerator or brake on the learning process

Emotions can affect the learner at different stages of the learning process. As it has been demonstrated, they can have a positive or negative impact on one’s attention, motivation, learning strategies and ability to self-regulate learning.

Accelerator or brake on the learning process

Emotions can affect the learner at different stages of the learning process. As it has been demonstrated, they can have a positive or negative impact on one’s attention, motivation, learning strategies and ability to self-regulate learning.

Some of the negative emotions that may hinder the learning process at any time include:

anxiety

fear of failure

embarrassment

the inability to understand an exercise

discouragement

boredom

On the side of the positive emotions that have a beneficial effect on this process, we find mainly:

the pleasure of learning in general

the pleasure of learning on a particular topic

enthusiasm for the learning materials

the hope of succeeding

pride due to achievements

Positive emotion not so beneficial and negative emotion not so bad

A clarification needs to be made: it is not because an emotion is positive, in the broad sense, that will necessarily make it beneficial to the learning process. To be useful, it must be related to learning or a specific task; otherwise, it can impair attention and affect performance.

In parallel – even if it is not a question of encouraging the rise of negative emotions in the learner – just because an emotion is negative does not represent in all circumstances a brake for the learner. Anxiety, embarrassment or anger can motivate the learners to redouble their efforts, provided that the learners want to succeed and believe in their chances to thrive. Of course, the intensity and frequency of the negative emotion felt will also have an impact – if it is too strong or recurrent, the learner risks being overwhelmed by the feeling of helplessness.

Empathic teaching

Unlike emotional contagion, empathy is a conscious phenomenon of being able to feel someone else’s emotional states, of “putting oneself in one’s shoes”. This skill, which begins with listening to one’s own emotions or “self-awareness,” is an integral part of the concept of “emotional intelligence.” Essential to decipher other’s feelings, this quality which implies being open and respectful towards others is one of the keys to effective communication.

Since every teacher has already been a learner, everyone can do this empathic exercise to remember the emotions that have marked their education, the situations that caused them and the teachers’ attitudes that have had a significant impact on them.

Take advantage of the learning environment

Because it is conducive to stimulating exchanges and surpassing oneself, a learning environment is generally a great place to develop emotional “skills”. This is true for the youngest learners, but also for adults … since we never stop evolving in terms of emotions. This context can, therefore, enable everyone to improve their social skills as well as their ability to collaborate, to express their point of view, to take initiatives, to listen to others, etc.

In turn, the learner must be willing to develop these skills. Nevertheless, some teaching approaches or activities can also stimulate this dimension, in addition to conveying the learning materials.

The two great allies of the learner

Self-confidence and attributing value to the tasks one performs are two things that the learner benefits from cultivating. In fact, they are essential for the manifestation of all the positive emotions associated with learning and for preventing or reducing the rise of negative emotions. Since the adults are responsible for managing their emotions, it is more fitting for them to take the time to stop and evaluate their condition with regard to these two factors. If it seems desirable to make changes, it is up to them to see what actions they can take or what help they can ask for.

The teacher may also have an influence on these two learner allies, including through emphasizing the learner’s strengths rather than his shortcomings, by stimulating his interest in the course-related tasks and by introducing to its teaching a culture where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn rather than failures. To maintain the interest of the adult learner, it is also necessary to clearly explain the concrete applications and benefits that can be derived from the learned knowledge.

The advantages of online training

Some e-learning tools are of great interest in creating an environment conducive to the development of positive emotions and fostering constructive interpersonal exchanges at each stage of the learning process. They can be used to take the learners’ pulse on the encountered difficulties, to discuss on a regular basis the most destabilizing challenges they face, or to invite them to propose topics for discussion and to launch themselves in meaningful exchanges.

Virtual reality to stimulate empathy

A word about virtual reality, this hyper-sophisticated solution that is more and more integrated into the training where the immersion can really serve the learning. Since virtual reality gives the impression of experiencing a real situation in an environment that exists for real, it is the tool that can generate in the learners the emotions they would face if they learned “on the field”. The advantage is that they can experiment for as long as necessary without putting themselves in danger or endangering others.

CAN ONLINE LEARNING REPLACE TRADITIONAL LEARNING ESSAY?

In the austere land which pioneered the system of Gurukul Vidya—where children would enroll at the onset of their teenage and make a residence with their Guru, keeping away from their families and all other material conceptions of who they were outside their Gurukul- it is an object of bewilderment as we see presently students acquiring knowledge and performing their school activities within the comfortable confines of their homes. How efficiently the ‘Vishwa Guru’ –Bharat conducted this method of education is a subject of massive debate and discussion. In my opinion, though the Indian diaspora has seen no paucity of effort to redeem the education system that had taken a fall in the infamous Corona period, the online education system has been utterly disappointing up until now—not just in India, but globally. Zoom calls, Google meets, etc. seem to act as an obliteration to the study process that was supposed to mold youngsters into pallbearers of the future of this country. Under issues of network problems, irregular schedules, the harrowing fear for health generally and moreover general loss of interest on side of the students—all led to an amalgamation that has severely inflicted harm on our education paradigm. Even with the personal interactions, live classes, and assessments—the issues of rote learning and defective curriculum had always taken the blame for the disturbing study which said that 78% of Indian graduates are deemed unemployable by any company of good credentials and 88% showed a lack of even the most basic skills pertaining to their subjects of graduation.

Under such circumstances how can we ever advocate the benefits of online learning over physical classes! Even physical education subjects are being taught over online platforms which is completely a sham---how can you understand the intricacies of how to tackle a spinner ball in cricket over video calls? How can you understand how to defend your ball against an onslaught of opponents in basketball? Under the pandemic situations—this method of study was the only option available to us. To prolong this practice over the traditional and effective method of study would be a crime against the country’s learning procedure.

Another major issue to ponder over is the utterly despicable state of evaluation procedures in online learning. Students employ all sorts of tricks, searching answers over the internet during their assessments without knowing even the most rudimentary lessons of their syllabus and the most pitiful fact about this method of examination is that—such students end up scoring high marks and are accordingly assessed and promoted—instilling in them a dangerous sense of confidence which can prove extremely harmful to the student’s growth on an overall basis. A few students who are actually obedient, willing to learn, and want to honestly follow the examination procedures even at a point where they have the option of neglecting these rules completely and getting away with it—they score less than the students who gain high marks through their dishonesty. This predicament is an utter injustice to the efforts of sincere students. Even this single fact should be enough by itself to portray the fallibility of this detrimental online education system.

At a time of extreme significance in the Indian educational diaspora where the government is on the threshold of incurring a revolutionary set of changes to be brought under the shift of NEW EDUCATION POLICY-2020, senselessly dragging the online system would be our own downfall. No amount of intricate technological innovations could ever hope to replace the personal touch of understanding and curiosity that a teacher could instill in a student. Algorithm-driven machines could conduct recorded lectures and store terabytes of information from the syllabus—it would never hold a candle to the compassionate and supportive care that a teacher could provide. The online learning method was an instrument for periods of emergency, instilling it as permanent would simply be disastrous. We must inculcate technology for our convenience in the educational paradigm but still retain our roots in the great teaching system

How Online Learning can change the Future!

According to India Today’s article published on 26 December 2020, *“One of the fastest-growing technological additions to education is artificial intelligence. With the 2020 pandemic coming into the picture, every institution has been forced to resort to online education. But as more people test the waters, they realize that virtual classrooms are also the future of education”.*

Let’s begin the discussion with the most important question-

Is online learning as effective as traditional learning?

For the learners who have the access to the right kind of required technology, several pieces of evidence have shown that learning virtually can be way more effective in various ways. Some research has shown that students retain approximately 25 to 60% more of the course material when they are learning online as compared to hardly 8 to 10% in a traditional classroom environment.

This is generally because of the students being able to learn at a quicker pace online. Online learning needs 40–60% less time as compared with the usual classroom teaching since the students can start and stop their learning at their own pace that suits their learning needs and mental state. Also, they can go back and re-read, skip or accelerate through concepts as they wish to and as required.

The effectiveness of various e-learning methods obviously varies amongst age groups. As per the general consensus on the younger generation, it is that a rather structurally stable environment is needed as kids easily tend to lose focus and get distracted by even the smallest of things. To be able to utilize online learning to the fullest, concerted efforts are required to provide structure and we need to go beyond the replication of an offline class or lecture environment through video technology. We can, instead, try to optimize it by using a wide range of collaboration tools along with various methods of engagement that can promote the key aspects of inclusion and personalization.

In an article published by World Economic Forum on 29 April 2020, BYJU’s Mrinal Mohit said- *“Since studies have shown that children extensively use their senses to learn, making learning fun and effective through the use of technology is crucial. Over a period, we have observed that clever integration of games has demonstrated higher engagement and increased motivation towards learning especially among younger students, making them truly fall in love with learning”.*

It is not new information that this unexpected pandemic has truly disrupted a system of education that many experts had said was already becoming irrelevant. The book *21 Lessons for the 21st Century* by Yuval Noah Harari describes how schools still focus on traditional and outdated academic skills and rote learning instead of focusing on the development of skills like critical thinking and adaptability, which are predicted to be more important for success in the near future, in fact even today! Is it possible that this shift to online learning can act as the catalyst to lead to the formation of a novel, more effective technique of providing education to students across the globe? While some experts are worried that the sudden, hasty transition of the system may be hindering this goal, the others plan to make virtual learning a part of their ‘new normal’ after weighing the pros and cons.

Why is online learning better than traditional learning: 5 reasons

1) Flexibility

The new technology of online education has allowed the teachers as well as the students across the globe to set a learning pace of their own. In addition to this, it has also provided the flexibility of setting a schedule that can fit the agenda of maximum people so that the utilization of time is optimum. The use of a virtual educational platform has enabled people to strike a better balance between work/job and studies. So, the need to compromise with anything or give anything up is eliminated.

Studying online has taught students time management which is crucial for them in the long run.

If the agendas of the students and the teachers coincide, it can also prompt both the groups to accept new responsibilities and it will also provide more autonomy.

2) Spoilt for choice

In an ever-expanding virtual space like the internet, there are n number of skills/topics/subjects that can be taught and learned about. With the passage of time, an exponentially increasing number of universities and higher education schools have started offering online or virtual versions of their classic programs for various levels and disciplines. Right from performing arts to rotational physics, there is a huge variety of options for every type of student/learner. Studying a particular program online is also a good option for earning an official certificate, diploma, or even a degree without having to physically set your foot on the real university campus.

3) Accessibility

Virtual learning facilitates studying and/or teaching from any corner of the world. This implies that there is absolutely no need to be traveling from one place to another. The need to follow a strict routine is also eliminated. In addition to this, not only does everyone save their precious time, but also save a ton of money that is usually spent on transport costs like fuel, passes, etc which can be put to better use- for other priorities. These virtual classrooms are also available in all the places where an internet connection is available, and a good way to take advantage of this is to travel without traveling! What we’re trying to say is, for example, if you’ve enrolled yourselves in a course abroad and are looking for a job, online education would be a good option to consider. There is no need to give up on working or studying while you also get to explore new and exotic locations.

4) Customization

We have already mentioned above how flexibility aids to set up a pace conveniently. However, e-learning is also flexible for every student’s individual needs and abilities.

Virtual classes generally tend to be shorter and smaller than the traditional ones. The students often gain access to the course/study material that is quite diverse in nature and uses multimedia forms such as videos, photos, eBooks and this also enables the tutors to integrate various other formats like forums or discussions to drastically improve their lessons. This extra content can be made available at any time from anywhere, which will offer a better, more dynamic and personalized education experience to the students.

5) Easy on the packet

Bryce Welker, CEO of CPA Exam Guy, in his article published on 24 March 2021 on Entrepreneur blog said “Skyrocketing costs that cause crippling student loan debt is a gargantuan issue that has only gotten worse over time”.

In contrast to face-to-face education methods, virtual education is usually considered to be way more affordable. Apart from that, very often, there is also a wide range of options available that enable the students to pay either in installments or even make the payments per every class. This facilitates a better management of finances for those who are struggling with a tight budget.

Many students may also be able to receive waivers, discounts or scholarships and the price is rarely high in such cases. Money can also be saved from the daily commute and the purchase of various class materials, which are often available for free in the case of virtual learning. In short, the monetary investment is quite less, however, the results achieved are usually way better than the other options. It’s safe to say that the subscription-based education model is being tested in some places.

For example, Richard DeMillo, director of the Georgia Institute of Technology Center for 21st Century Universities, spoke with The New York Times and said- “The Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the places mulling a subscription model. It would include access to a worldwide network of mentors and advisers and whatever someone needs to do to improve their professional situation or acquire a new skill or get feedback on how things are going.”

Robots: The teachers of the future?

Georgia Tech is apparently experimenting with a teaching assistant named Jill Watson, a robot designed on the Jeopardy-winning supercomputer platform- IBM Watson. This Artificial Intelligence powered teaching assistant robot gives answers to the questions in a discussion forum along with human teaching assistants and surprisingly students most often are not able to distinguish among them if the professors’ comments are to be believed.

More of such innovations can aid the students to overcome several hindrances that they generally encounter in large class sizes or virtual courses. The university is also working on the development of virtual tutors, which may be viable in the next few years as per their prediction.

Why it is the need of the hour?

“Technology-driven collaboration will also help alleviate faculty shortages plaguing institutions worldwide” according to an article published by Harvard Business Review.

With regards to the corporate world, Leah Belsky quoted the example of Google IT Support Professional Certificate and mentioned in the article-

“As talent shortages grow worldwide, institutions, and enterprises must chart partnerships that equip learners with employable skills.”

Conclusion

Coursenator has given you the reasons to choose online learning over traditional learning. However, these are only a few of the many reasons to choose virtual education and why approximately 90% of the students today are of the opinion that e-learning is similar to or even better than the usual classroom experience. We suggest that every student must assess their own unique/individual situation and then make a decision as per their specific needs and/or goals.

Additionally, we think that while this system could be an alternative to the traditional education system, it may not be the perfect fit for everyone, however, it’s still quite a convenient option that can provide endless options for students all over the world and we also think that we can tap its potential to bring up the literacy rate in the world
